Joint takeover offer for Vodafone from U.S. rivals?

Shares of Vodafone surged as much as 6% on speculations American rivals  Verizon Communications and AT&T are working on a joint takeover offer for the British mobile-phone company. Verizon would buy out Vodafone’s 45% stake in Verizon Wireless, and AT&T buying Vodafone’s non-U.S. assets, Financial Times blog FT Alphaville reported. The offer could be placed at about 260 pence ($3.95) per share, repre-sentting a nearly 40% premium.
